About
IISc (Indian Institute of Science) actively encourages students to attend and present their work at national and international conferences. Such opportunities would allow them to stay in touch with research trends, gain a deeper understanding of their field of interest, and build fruitful collaborations with leading researchers worldwide.
The Office of Development and Alumni Affairs (ODAA) has received some funds from alumni and other well-wishers of the student community here. These may be availed by senior PhD students if they are short of funds available from GARP and other sources for making an international travel to present their work at a highly reputed conference/symposium/workshop/seminar in their discipline.
Please note: We have revamped the rules and application process for Travel Support. Please read the information below carefully.
Application Guidelines
Deadline: 8th december 2024
1. The funds are open to only registered students pursuing regular PhD programs. De-registered students are not invited to apply.
2. Students must apply for Travel Support via the new portal created.
3. Students who received travel grant support once from ODAA will not be considered again.
4. As per Institute policy, no travel support will be available for students who have not completed their Comprehensive Examination.
5. To be eligible the student must have an accepted publication in a reputable international conference or symposium or workshop and must furnish proof clearly stating whether it is an oral or poster presentation. Please do not apply if you have not yet received an acceptance of your paper from the conference organizers.
6. A committee will evaluate the travel grant applications and disburse funds accordingly.
7. Travel support will ONLY be provided on a reimbursement basis within a month after travel, and not as an advance like GARP, that too, only after providing the bills to support the claim and a 250 words write-up of the conference.
8. Travel Support applications can be submitted for one conference only. If you are traveling to more than one conference concurrently, please apply for travel support for only one of those conferences.
9. The decision of the selection committee will only be announced within approximately a month after the application deadline has passed. Please check the website periodically for updates.

Travel Grants
D Nagarajachar Fund For Student Travel: The fund was set up in 2016 by alumnus DN Prahlad (BE, EE – 1977), for 10 years, to enable students to attend international conferences, seminars, and workshops to present their research papers as well as to interact with leading scientists in their areas of work. 2024 Awardees: Bangar Sarika Shivaji, Aritra Biswas
PV Lakshminarayana Student Travel Grant: Alumnus PV Lakshminarayana (BE, ECE-1983) set up this fund in 2017 to meet the travel expenses of students attending international conferences to present their papers.
Lakshmi & Aravamudan Student Travel Fund: This endowment was set up in 2018 by alumnus Murali Aravamudan (ME, ECE-1989) to support student travel to international conferences. 2024 Awardees: Sanjay Shukla, Suryadeep Nath, Jonnalagadda Surekha, Almas Siddiqui
Apra Labs Travel Grants: These grants were established by Apra Labs in 2019 with the objective of enabling women students in the ECE Department to present their work at international conferences.
Ravi Salgia Travel Grant: This fund was set up by Prof. Ravi Salgia in 2020 with the aim of enabling students to travel to international conferences where they can present their papers and learn from experts in their field.
Dr A Selvarajan Endowment Travel Fund: Prof A Selvarajan was an IISc alumnus, and a Professor and Chair of ECE Department. His primary research contributions were in the area of photonics and optical communication. He was very passionate about supporting young researchers working in emerging areas. He and his wife Mrs. Indira Devi made a donation through ODAA, IISc to support bright faculty and students of IISc to carry out research in the broad area of photonics.
Interdisciplinary Research Division Travel Fund: To provide annual support for students in the Division of Interdisciplinary Research travelling to international conferences. Applicable to students whose departments come under this division. 2024 Awardee: Aniruddhan Gowrisankar
EECS | Sarukkai Jagannathan Award: The Sarukkai Jagannathan Travel provides financial support of up to Rs.30,000/- every year for a Ph.D. student in the Division of EECS for presentation of a research paper in a reputed International Conference. 2024 Awardees: Nayak Ajay Ashok, Rishikesh Reddy
EECS | Professor Joseph Vithayathil Travel Award and Professor V. T. Ranganathan Travel Award: Prof. Joseph Vithayathil Travel award and the Prof. V. T. Ranganathan Travel Award have been instituted for providing financial support of up to Rs.30,000/- every year for a Ph.D. student in the Division of EECS for presentation of a research paper in a reputed International Conference in the areas of power systems, power electronics, or high voltage engineering. This is made possible through generous endowments received from the students of Prof. Joseph Vithayathil and Prof. V. T. Ranganathan. 2024 Awardees: Subrata Basak, Himanshu Bhushan Sandhibigraha.
Exhausted Travel Funds
Lalitha and Ravindranath Travel Fund: This fund was set up in 2018 by LRN Foundation to support the travel of students and post-doctoral researchers in the department of Biochemistry to attend international conferences.
Donor Guidelines
Named travel grants can be established with a one-time endowment of minimum Rs 22 lakhs (includes institute administrative overheads), which currently provides travel support upto one lakh, which is approximately sufficient for one student.
Donors can also set up a one-time grant with a contribution of Rs 2 lakhs. Smaller contributions will be accumulated under a common pool travel fund until sufficient targets are reached. An Institute-appointed committee will oversee the beneficiary selection process.
