Prof S Ranganathan Research Fund
The Indian Institute of Science and the Department of Materials Engineering announce the launch of the ‘Prof. S. Ranganathan Research Fund’. We aim to generate a corpus of at least Rs. 2 crores that will serve the twin objectives of rewarding the best woman graduating student from Materials Engineering and some infrastructural development in the department.
A distinguished alumnus of the department (B.E. 1962), Professor S. Ranganathan joined as the Chairman of the Department of Metallurgy in 1982, after having a distinguished career at Banaras Hindu University. He served the institute for 26 years since 1982 first as the Chairman of the department and subsequently the Chair of the Division of Mechanical Sciences. Apart from these administrative roles, Prof. Ranganathan was a inspiring Professor. A well-known and internationally respected expert in physical metallurgy, Prof. Ranganathan is known for contributions in the fields of electron microscopy, structure of interfaces, and quasicrystals. He has received several awards, both nationally and internationally, including the Platinum Medal from the Indian Institute of Metals, the MRSI Medal, and the Materials Science Prize from the Indian National Science Academy. His work is recognised by fellowships to five academies. After his active career at IISc, he continued his research work at NIAS alongside some activities at IISc. During this period he worked extensively on heritage materials. During the course of his career, he has mentored several generations of students, who have excelled in their own professional lives and recognized as leaders in industry and academia.
The Institute and the department, where he spent a substantial part of his professional life, have launched this appeal for funds in the honour of Prof. Ranganathan to celebrate his accomplishments and contributions.
We invite alumni and well-wishers to contribute generously to the fund.
