Fund for Advancement of Photonics Technology

Photonics is one of the rapidly advancing fields and actively pursued by academia and industry world over. The exponential growth of wireless communication demanding high internet speeds needs a high bandwidth optical backbone which is driven by photonics technology. Photonics is a very powerful and beneficial technology that promises more than traditional electronics in terms of transport of high-capacity, high-speed and wide bandwidth signals across the globe; multiple and multi-parameter photonic sensors; image processing and signal processing instruments for bio-medical applications and many more. Photonics work in IISc was started in the ECE Department in the early 1970s. Shortly after that, the work expanded to cover topics such as optical networks, fiber optic sensors, lasers, integrated optics and many more.

It is very clear that advances in Photonics technologies would significantly impact next-generation communication systems, biomedical instrumentation, navigation and other areas. This fund will assist researchers and students to acquire equipment and create awareness of photonics through workshops and education modules, which will create a vibrant research environment in IISc.

The fund has already received an initial contribution from retired faculty member Prof. Ananth Selvarajan (ECE) and his wife, Mrs. Indira Devi, who have committed a generous sum of Rs. 20 lakhs towards this cause. The initiative will be managed by the ECE Department at IISc.

We also welcome contributions from corporates and philanthropists (please visit https://odaa.iisc.ac.in/corporates-philanthropists/ for more details).
