About

Triveni Turbine Limited and IISc signed an MoU in November 2025, to establish the Dhruv Manmohan Sawhney Turbomachinery Chair Professorship at the Institute. The Chair Professorship will support faculty members in carrying out teaching and research in the areas of thermal engineering, metallurgy and energy transition & efficiency, and so on.

In addition, Triveni Turbine has inaugurated the Triveni Turbines Centre of Excellence at IISc to drive research in energy transition. It aims to develop sustainable, high-efficiency systems that can help industries improve process performance, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce carbon emissions. 

Nomination Procedure

  • The Chair Professorship would be awarded to a nominated faculty member with stellar performance. Self-nominations are also permitted. The national level Selection Committee for this purpose, headed by a Divisional Dean at IISc, will include two distinguished experts nominated by the Director, IISc.

  • Each term of the award is for a three years period. In exceptional cases, a candidate faculty could be awarded this Chair Professorship position for a second term.

  • Eligibility: Any Professor of IISc, a) who has completed at least 3 years of service as Professor and b) who is actively engaged in research in the broad area of thermal engineering, metallurgy and energy transition & efficiency.

Benefits

  • The selected incumbent will occupy the Chair for a period of three years. A monthly top-up salary of Rs. 75,000/- and annual research grant of Rs. 8 lakh shall be provided. 
  • The Chair Associate Professor/Professor will be required to submit a brief annual report to the Director, IISc on the research activities conducted and students mentored with the financial support received.

Responsibility

The selected faculty member is expected to be

  1. actively engaged in research and academic activities at IISc and within academia ecosystem in and outside India
  2. engage with the industries (any) and contribute to a strong research and development ecosystem around the institute,
  3. organize a national workshop (expenses in this regard will be borne by TTL) to engage with employees and other stakeholders identified
  4. enable connections between related/relevant groups/departments/domains to broaden IISc and TTL collaboration.
