About

Professor Roddam Narasimha (1933–2020) was an eminent teacher, world-class researcher, and visionary leader who made transformative contributions to science, technology, and education in India. Primarily renowned for his work in fluid dynamics, his interests spanned aerospace technology, atmospheric sciences, philosophy, and national policy. After completing his Ph.D. at Caltech in 1961, he joined IISc in 1962, serving in the Department of Aerospace Engineering until 1999. He founded the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (now CAOS) and played key roles as Director of the National Aerospace Laboratories (1984–1993) and the National Institute of Advanced Studies (1997–2004).

Prof. Narasimha was instrumental in shaping India’s aerospace and computing initiatives and conceptualized the Indo-French Megha-Tropiques satellite mission. His distinguished career earned him global recognition, including election to the US National Academy of Sciences and Fellowship of the Royal Society (UK), alongside numerous Indian honors such as the Padma Bhushan and the Bhatnagar Prize. A mentor, institution builder, and policy advisor, he remained active in research until his passing in December 2020.
