Office of Development and Alumni Affairs

The Department of Physics is creating a general endowment fund to enhance the academic and research experience of physics students within and outside IISc. IISc is the top university and research institution in India, however, we are striving towards being the top institution in the world. As a department, we are determined to increase outreach by providing academic and research opportunities to people outside IISc. Secondly, we plan to provide travel support to students for presenting their research at world-class conferences and improve the visibility of the department and IISc. Thirdly, we plan to enhance our visitor program for both students and faculty. The benefits of the visitor program are the increased collaborative opportunities for students and faculty of the department. We plan to provide undergraduates with research contingency funds, as well as support PhD admission application charges on a merit-cum-means basis. We also plan to supplement the Physics Department Aditi Simha Welfare Fund. This fund was set up in the year 2020 with a seed donation of ten lakhs INR from the late Prof. Roddam Narasimha, in memory of his daughter and Physics department alum Dr. Aditi Simha. The department welfare fund helps students and staff members in times of urgent need, including medical issues.

The Department of Physics was established in 1933 by the Nobel Laureate C. V. Raman. Illustrious names of Indian Science such as Homi Bhabha, Vikram Sarabhai, R. S. Krishnan, G. N. Ramachandran, S. Ramaseshan and T. V. Ramakrishnan have been associated with this department. It is now a well-established research centre for condensed matter physics and astrophysics, with thirty-one faculty members and 202 PhD Students, along with a flourishing undergraduate program. Graduates from the department have gone on to distinguished careers in science and have leading positions in research institutes and industries in India and the world over.

We invite contributions to this General Endowment Fund, and towards supporting our social and educational missions in the present and in the future.
