The ECE Department has, over the past few years, been attracting a large number of bright students to pursue research. In order for these students to gain experience and interact with their peer groups across the globe, it is necessary for the students to present papers in premier conferences in their respective research areas. The current travel support given to students for their entire duration of research studies is not sufficient sometimes for even one conference. Funds towards contingency/working expenses are also limited. There is a pressing need to augment resources for supporting this activity in the Department.
The ECE Department has launched this initiative to support the research and professional development needs of its students, and actively seeks generous contribution from its alumni towards this Fund.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has been running an active summer internship program (May – July) since 2010. The program attracts about 20-25 undergraduates from across the country, selected through an open application process, who spend 6 weeks in the department. Through a series of lectures, laboratory visits, and short projects, the students are exposed to modern aspects of chemical engineering research and training. The internship exposes students to chemical engineering research at IISc, through close interaction with faculty and students. The department envisions that the summer internship plays a critical role in our outreach activity to seek out talented undergraduates and expose them to chemical engineering research. Several summer interns have returned to IISc, to pursue either a Masters or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering.
This fund will provide a stipend for the summer intern, to cover travel and local accommodation during their internship. We would like to restructure and expand the summer internship to attract about 40-45 summer interns to this program.
We invite contributions from alumni and well-wishers towards this initiative.

Professor Kadavil Poulose Abraham (1920-2011) served the department for 21 years, including the period 1972-1977 when he was the fourth Head of the Department. As a teacher, Professor Abraham inspired many generations of students through his lectures on thermodynamics and extractive metallurgy. His teaching covered both iron & steel and nonferrous metals. He helped establish laboratories in Process Metallurgy, some of which were pioneering in the Indian scene. When that generation of alxumni reflects on the solidity of the fundamentals with which they left IISc, it is in large part a testimony to the academic excellence that Professor Abraham nurtured. His students went on to become leading metallurgists and materials scientists, both, in academic institutions as well as in industry, in India and abroad. In launching this appeal, the Institute and the department, where he spent the major part of his working life, would like to pay tribute to his accomplishments in laying the foundations for what has now become a vibrant centre for teaching and research in the field of materials in India.
The KP Abraham Chair Professorship will add to existing chairs to enable distinguished scientists to spend significant periods of time at IISc.
We invite alumni and well-wishers to contribute generously to the fund.
Target: The immediate target is to raise Rs. 50 lakhs and ultimate target is Rs. 1 crore to establish an endowment, the interest of which will be used to support the visits of distinguished scientists to IISc. Currently as on July 2017, we have received generous contributions amounting to Rs. 41 lakhs.
